Google has updated its Gemini app with built-in AI picture editing features, allowing users to edit both AI-generated and personal images directly in the app. This eliminates the need for third-party software, simplifying the editing process.
Users can quickly change backgrounds, rearrange objects, and apply effects thanks to the easy, prompt-based interface. The update establishes Gemini as a versatile, all-in-one solution for both casual and professional picture editing.
Empowering Users with Integrated AI Editing
Google announced in a blog post on Wednesday that the Gemini app will now include AI-powered image editing. This new function lets users upload photographs from their smartphones or PCs and specify the changes they want to make.
The AI tool will initially allow users to change backgrounds, swap objects, and add new features to their photographs.
The editing process is intended to be simple and conversational, allowing users to obtain more detailed, contextual responses that include both text and graphics. This strategy improves the app’s storytelling potential, allowing users to construct storylines accompanied by relevant photos.
According to the blog post,
Consistent with all AI-generated images with Gemini, images created or edited with native image generation will include the invisible SynthID digital watermark. We’re also currently experimenting with adding a visible watermark on all images generated by Gemini. Native image editing in Gemini will start rolling out gradually today, expanding to more people in over 45 languages and most countries in the coming weeks.
It further reads,
This intuitive, multi-step editing capability means you can get richer, more contextual responses to your prompts with text and images integrated. For example, you could ask Gemini to create a first draft of a bedtime story about dragons and provide images to go along with the story.
The feature, powered by Gemini 2.0 Flash, appeared in Google’s AI Studio earlier in 2024 and received both good and negative feedback for its ability to remove watermarks. Following the initial testing period, the technology has been straight away integrated into the Gemini mobile and web apps, allowing a larger audience to access it.
While Gemini entered the AI image creation space later than rivals like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Midjourney, this latest iteration reflects a resolute effort to catch up and maybe even surpass existing options.
After early failure with wrong and inappropriate image results, Google temporarily pulled the feature before reinstating it with significant enhancements last December 2024.
Commitment to Ethical AI Use
In response to concerns about the possible misuse of AI-generated material, Google has created policies to promote openness and ethical use. All photographs modified or made with the Gemini app will have an invisible SynthID digital stamp, showing that they are AI-generated. Furthermore, the company is experimenting with visual watermarks to better differentiate AI-edited photographs.
The integration of native AI picture editing to the Google Gemini app is a huge step toward making complex photo editing tools more accessible and user-friendly. Google continues to expand its customers’ creative potential by merging conversational AI with easy editing tools, all while remaining committed to ethical AI practices.
