Freshman Senator Jon Husted (R-Ohio) is on a mission to bring artificial intelligence to the heart of government. In an exclusive interview, Husted said he sees AI in Congress as the path to strengthening the U.S. economy, improving education, and streamlining government processes while ensuring America stays ahead of China.
At 57, Husted is one of the younger members of a Senate where the median age is 65, and he’s using that to his advantage, positioning himself as a forward-thinking lawmaker.
From Senate Floor to Students
Husted’s enthusiasm for AI policy isn’t just talk — he’s actively using AI in his daily life. From comparing AI tools to relying on chatbots during Senate proceedings, he walks the talk.
He recently introduced bipartisan legislation with Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) to ban the Chinese AI platform DeepSeek from government devices, citing national security concerns.
Husted previously championed AI in classrooms while serving as lieutenant governor of Ohio and praised former President Trump’s recent executive order calling for AI to be taught in schools.
AI to Outpace China
Husted views AI as central to national strategy, believing it can power economic growth, military strength, and educational reform. His approach aligns with a broader Republican push to counter China’s technological rise.
As tariffs remain a political hot-button in Ohio, Husted acknowledged constituent concerns but said voters still support tough trade stances, especially against China. He noted that many Ohioans have “been the victim of China’s cheating and taking their jobs.”
A Political Gamble on AI and the Future
Husted considered running for governor but opted for the Senate — a decision he says hinges on what he can achieve in Congress. He’ll face reelection in 2026 but is unfazed. If Husted’s AI-driven vision takes hold, he could help reshape not only how Washington works but also how America competes globally.
