SenseTime, one of the world’s top artificial intelligence software companies, has partnered with The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Law (CUHK LAW) to improve public access to legal information. The two parties recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that marks a big step forward for the use of technology in the legal field in Hong Kong.
The collaboration aims to create an AI model designed to deliver easy-to-understand legal information to the public. This model will be built on Sensechat, SenseTime’s advanced Cantonese language model, and will be freely available to people across Hong Kong.
Bridging Law and Technology to Help the Community
The main goal of this partnership is to use AI to make legal information more accessible and easier for everyday people to understand. In Hong Kong, where both Chinese and English are used in law, navigating the legal system can sometimes be challenging for the public. SenseTime’s AI model hopes to bridge that gap by offering round-the-clock, Cantonese-language legal information services that can answer common legal questions.
Lin Dahua, Co-Founder and Chief Scientist for AI Infrastructure and Large Model at SenseTime, said this partnership allows both organizations to play to their strengths. SenseTime brings cutting-edge AI knowledge, while CUHK LAW provides deep legal expertise. Lin also highlighted that this project is part of SenseTime’s bigger mission to use technology for public good and create real social value.
At the same time, the initiative will give law students at CUHK hands-on experience in working with AI, preparing them for the future of law and technology.
Making Legal Information More Accessible to Everyone
Professor Chao Xi, the Dean of CUHK LAW, emphasized how vital it is to make legal information clear and easy for everyone to understand. He explained that Hong Kong is the only place in China that uses a common law system and has a legal system in both Chinese and English. This makes it even more important for people to have the right tools to understand their rights and responsibilities.
With this new partnership, the AI-powered platform will help people quickly access legal information they need for everyday life, without having to be legal experts or pay for expensive consultations.
A Stronger Future for Law and Technology in Hong Kong
SenseTime and CUHK LAW have teamed up with a simple goal: to use AI in a smart, responsible way that truly helps people. SenseTime, which has deep roots in Hong Kong, is committed to boosting the city’s innovation and tech growth. On their side, CUHK LAW has been getting students ready for the future by offering law and technology courses since 2020 and leading important research through its Center for Legal Innovation and Digital Society. Now, both SenseTime and CUHK LAW are excited to take their partnership even further, working together to build a future where legal information is easy for everyone to access and understand.
