“Godfather of AI” and 2024 Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton has issued a warning about the growing risks associated with AI technology. Hinton compared AI’s rapid evolution to raising a tiger cub, charming but potentially lethal.
He warned that artificial intelligence could surpass human intelligence sooner than expected, leading to risks we are not prepared to manage. Hinton’s outspoken views also reflect his disappointment with tech giants like Google and his concerns over OpenAI’s controversial restructuring.
Is the World Ready for AI’s Unseen Threats?
In a recent CBS News interview, Hinton emphasized how AI technology risks are growing faster than previously believed. Hinton now thinks super intelligent AI could be developed in less than ten years, whereas he originally predicted it would take five to twenty years.
Due to intense international competition, AI development is accelerating to the point where it is nearly impossible to slow down. Hinton fears AI could eventually manipulate humans, creating unpredictable and dangerous outcomes.
Hinton finds the emergence of autonomous AI agents especially concerning because these systems are now capable of carrying out tasks without direct human supervision. He said that artificial intelligence will eventually act in ways we may not anticipate or control. With a clear statement that “things have gotten scarier,” he projects a 10–20% chance that AI will eventually take over.
Race for AI Superpower Threatens Human Control
Hinton also voiced deep concerns about how corporations are prioritizing profit over safety. He criticized Google, where he worked for over a decade, for reversing its stance against military use of AI development. Following his resignation from Google, Hinton has become a leading voice for responsible AI technology risk management. He warned that companies chasing “the next shiny thing” often overlook broader implications.
In December 2023, OpenAI announced a restructuring plan to shift control from its non-profit to a for-profit entity. The company is aiming to secure a $40 billion investment from Japan’s SoftBank. According to Hinton, this action goes against the company’s initial goal of ensuring that AI serves the interests of all people. He believes such decisions boost AI development risks without adequate security.
Hinton added more weight to his warnings by signing an open letter to the attorneys general of Delaware and California, urging them to stop the reorganization of OpenAI. In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), he emphasized the pivotal role of AGI (artificial general intelligence) in shaping the future. He stated, “AGI is the most important and potentially dangerous technology of our time.” Elon Musk retweeted this in support of him.
AI’s Rapid Growth and the Uncertain Road Ahead
The risks associated with AI technology continue to increase unchecked due to the rapid pace of AI development. Hinton makes it very evident that humanity may lose control of its most potent invention if strict regulation and privacy are not in place. Hinton highlights the need for society to recognize the threats that lie ahead. To reduce the risks connected to AI technology, they must act swiftly.
Hinton Urges Global Action on AI
Geoffrey Hinton’s warnings are crucial for the public and technology leaders. As the risks associated with AI technology continue to increase, he highlights the critical need to give safety and ethical responsibility top priority when developing AI. The future of AI depends on how we choose to regulate and control it now.
