Indonesia has emerged on the global platform with new urgency in artificial intelligence (AI) innovation and regulation. In her speech at the AI Summit London 2025, Vice Minister of Communications and Digital Nezar Patria stated the country wants to lead the responsible development of AI and promote collaboration among AI authorities to drive Indonesia’s digital transformation.
AI in Journalism
Nezar’s schedule at the summit included attending two high-visibility sessions. One focus was the changing role of AI in journalism – a field in which automation is changing the way news and content are created while raising serious concerns about ethics.
During the session led by Reuters AI Strategy Head Jane Barrett, and Editor-in-Chief Alessandra Galloni, session participants discussed how AI will improve newsrooms with faster and personalized reporting, but warned that misinformation will be magnified along with a diminished trust in the public realm.
AI Meets Space
In a second session titled “Space Meets AI”, Nezar explored the intersection of AI and space technology—highlighting the future of AI-powered infrastructure beyond Earth.
Led by Eileen M. Vidrine, former Chief Data & AI Officer of the U.S. Air Force, and featuring panelists from the UK Space Agency and Oxford Dynamics, the discussion spotlighted AI’s role in building lunar data centers, enhancing satellite systems, and developing sustainable habitats in space.
According to Nezar, these technologies are essential not just for global innovation, but for addressing sustainability and connectivity challenges back on Earth, especially in archipelagic nations like Indonesia.
Indonesia’s AI Roadmap
Indonesia is developing a national AI strategy placing emphasis on safe and equitable use in media, education, health, and defense. The objectives listed in the national strategy call for responsible regulation of AI, raising digital literacy, investing in AI infrastructure, and advancing ethical standards through international collaboration. The Vice Minister’s visit to London reflects Indonesia’s desire to be an active player in framing the global AI landscape.
Conclusion
The AI Summit London 2025 offered a global lens on artificial intelligence’s rapid transformation of society. For Indonesia, Vice Minister Nezar Patria’s participation marked a pivotal moment to elevate the country’s role in the global AI ecosystem anchored in innovation, integrity, and international cooperation.
