The Government of Jharkhand plans to implement artificial intelligence (AI)- enabled technologies to enhance security and crowd control for the upcoming Shravani Mela, scheduled to take place on July 11, 2025, in Deoghar and Basukinath.
On Friday, State Tourism Minister Sudivya Kumar held a high-level meeting to review preparations with senior officials from Deoghar and Dumka districts. Considering that over 50 lakh pilgrims are expected from India and abroad, officials are increasing both traditional arrangements and technology-driven arrangements for the month-long religious event.
AI at the Heart of Crowd Control and Safety
This year’s Shravani Mela will see a major tech upgrade with the installation of 900 CCTV cameras, including 200 AI-enabled units for real-time monitoring and predictive responses to crowd situations. Officials say these AI systems will help manage the large influx of devotees more safely and efficiently. Integrated Control Rooms and facial recognition cameras will enhance security, while drone surveillance and head-counting systems will aid in crowd control.
The digital transformation extends to visitor experience and administration as well. Chatbot-based feedback systems, QR-code-enabled complaint filing, and large public display screens will streamline communication. A location-based attendance system will track administrative teams, and a digital pavilion will offer interactive exhibits to enrich the devotional experience.
Focus on Deoghar and Basukinath
While the Deoghar Baidyanath Dham temple is the prime destination, the Basukinath temple in Dumka another major Shaivite site will also benefit from the upgraded arrangements.
Deputy Commissioners Aman Priyesh Lakda (Deoghar) and Abhijeet Sinha (Dumka) presented a detailed plan to the minister through a PowerPoint presentation. The review covered sensitive areas, including Shivganga pond, kanwariya routes, queue complexes, and facilities at interstate entry points.
Sanitation, Water, and Transport Also Prioritized
Beyond technological upgrades, Minister Sudivya Kumar stressed the importance of improving core infrastructure for the upcoming Shravani Mela. Key focus areas include sanitation, waste management, drinking water supply, electricity, lighting, and adequate toilet and accommodation facilities. Smooth traffic and transport regulation are also being prioritized to manage the large influx of devotees.
The minister personally inspected preparations on foot, including the Dumma interstate border and other major entry points, instructing officials to complete all arrangements by July 5. “Devotees should return home with a positive and safe experience,” he affirmed.
The Bottom Line
Jharkhand’s move to integrate AI in religious crowd management could set a precedent for similar events across India. As technology blends with tradition, this year’s Shravani Mela may offer a safer, smarter pilgrimage experience at two of the country’s most sacred Shiva temples.
